Otis recalling private home elevators reports of ‘crushed spine and abdomen’ and other injuries

subsidiary Otis Elevator Co., and former Otis sub CemcoLift Elevators Systems, is recalling about 5,000 private residence elevators, after at least four incidents that resulted in “a crushed spine and abdomen, fractured hip, broken arm and feet and bruising to the face and chest.” The recall involves “Otis and CemcoLift Private Residence Elevators” made in the U.S.A. and purchased from 1999 to 2012 at a cost of about $20,000 to buy and install. “Children can become entrapped in the space between the exterior landing (hoistway) door and the interior elevator car door or gate, and suffer serious injuries or death when the elevator is called to another floor,” according to a statement on the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website.
