Trump gave extra Secret Service protection to Mnuchin and others, costing $1.7 million: report

Former President Donald Trump as he left office gave six months extra Secret Service protection to his children and three officials including ex-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, the Washington Post reported Friday. An order by Trump, described by the Post as highly unusual, triggered $1.7 million in extra government spending, including $52,000 to guard Mnuchin on a business trip. The Post said the Secret Service declined to comment beyond a statement that it “balances operational security requirements with judicious allocation of resources.” Trump’s post-presidential office didn’t respond, the Post said, while a spokesman for Mnuchin said the former Treasury chief hadn’t asked for the extra protection and that he intends to reimburse certain expenses.
