Matt Peet Reveals Ambitious Plans Off the Field Following Wigan Heroes’ Triumph

MATT Peet filled Wigan with happiness as he led them to the extraordinary feat of capturing four trophies, though he understood that this joy might be temporary.

He was mindful that many would soon return to the ‘relentless struggle’ of supporting those grappling with day-to-day survival, managing bills, and facing the challenges posed by the cost of living crisis.

Consequently, his primary focus is on strengthening the Warriors’ influence within the community they embody.

Recent statistics highlight a troubling trend, with suicide rates in the Greater Manchester region skyrocketing by over 50% between 2020 and 2022, while almost a quarter of children live in poverty.

Thus, while their on-field success—claiming the Super League, World Club Challenge, Challenge Cup, and League Leaders’ Shield—underscores Wigan’s competitive prowess, addressing societal concerns remains just as important for the coach.

Peet, who is nominated for the Coach of the Year award at tonight’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards while his team contends for another Team of the Year title, is acutely aware of the larger picture.

He remarked: “These challenges will inevitably endure. I know and have met individuals who are facing them.

“People in the community, including players, probably have someone close to them who is struggling during these challenging times.

“The data regarding specific issues in Wigan—such as elevated suicide and child poverty rates, as well as unemployment—is concerning.

“I’ve heard numerous accounts, and such situations are increasingly common. In the past, financial or housing difficulties predominantly affected the unemployed.

“However, now, even individuals with full-time employment find it increasingly difficult to make ends meet—this leads to a variety of related issues, including childcare, mental health struggles, and substance dependency.

“It’s a continuous fight. We must stay rooted and recognize that there are those experiencing hardships.

“We have the opportunity to leverage our influence to improve the lives of others.

“The true benefit of our success on the field is that it inspires more individuals—seeing the team achieve allows them to relish the experience and connect with important moments, whether they are present or watching on television.

“This promotes greater involvement and visibility. The players become more recognizable, giving them the platform to inspire a broader audience.

“It also lends purpose to our club. We can stand for something significant and foster change. Winning matches is exhilarating and appreciated by all, but if we can combine that with making a positive impact on the town and its people, we nurture goodwill and motivate our players to engage in these efforts—they find real satisfaction in doing so.”

The newest initiative from Wigan to support its community was the Night Under The Lights event last Tuesday, which saw over 900 participants come together with players to assist local anti-poverty organization The Brick and The Multibank, an initiative aimed at combating hygiene poverty.

Peet emphasized that ongoing efforts are in motion, though the journey is far from over.

He noted: “The club is actively engaging with the community across various initiatives. I am aware that discussions with the council and our board are ongoing.

“The players are participating in numerous activities with The Brick, local homeless organizations, Wigan and Leigh Hospice, schools, and community clubs.

“Our community foundation team is becoming increasingly robust, and we aspire to expand this aspect.

“This mission will never truly conclude, but it is a core focus for the club to engage and connect not only with our supporters but also with all residents of the town.”
