Outcome of Police Operation in Riverlea: Six Individuals Arrested for Illegal Mining, Firearms Confiscated after Shootout

Johannesburg – Six individuals suspected of illegal mining have been apprehended in Riverlea, Langlaagte, following an exchange of gunfire with the police.

According to Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the arrests took place on Friday, (27 December 2024).

“Police confiscated unlicensed firearms and ammunition utilized by the suspects,” Lieutenant Colonel Masondo stated.

The police received intelligence regarding illegal mining operations in Riverlea.

Members of the police National Intervention Unit acted on this intelligence and commenced a search for the suspects.

“Upon arriving at the specified location, police discovered tools associated with illegal mining activities,” Lieutenant Colonel Masondo remarked.

“As officers were seizing the tools, the suspects opened fire, leading to a shootout.”

The police arrested two suspects who possessed two firearms: a rifle and a pistol, along with loaded magazines.

Additionally, four other suspects were apprehended nearby.

Lieutenant Colonel Masondo indicated that those arrested face various charges, including attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“Further investigations have revealed that all suspects are illegally present in the country,” Lieutenant Colonel Masondo added.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
