Kwaito Icon Doc Shebeleza Dies: Minister Gayton McKenzie Mourns as South Africa Suffers a Great Loss
Pretoria – Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, states that the passing of the iconic Kwaito artist Victor “Doc Shebeleza” Bogopane marks a profound loss for both South Africa and the broader music community.
Doc Shebeleza, who had been unwell, unfortunately passed away earlier today (Thursday, 9 January 2025), at the age of 51.
Born in 1973 in Soweto, Doc Shebeleza was raised in a household that cherished cultural expression.
From a young age, he was influenced by a wide range of musical styles, from kwaito to traditional South African music, all of which significantly shaped his artistic path.
He debuted in 1995 with his album, Shebeleza, which included the unforgettable hit Ghets Ghetsa.
This triumph was followed by his album S’kumfete, which featured another popular track of the same title.
Throughout his career, he established his legacy with three additional albums: Tiger (1997), Ebumnandini (2000), and Jiva Yoyo (2001).
In recognition of his significant contributions to the genre, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Mzansi Kwaito and House Music Awards.
His influence reached beyond his own music, as seen in rapper Cassper Nyovest’s tribute song Doc Shebeleza, which honored his lifestyle and impact.
Doc Shebeleza later teamed up with Cassper on the track Monate So, demonstrating the respect and admiration that transcended generations of artists.
After retiring from the music scene, Doc Shebeleza committed himself to philanthropy.
He established the non-profit organization AMAHA (African Musicians Against HIV/AIDS), focusing on social initiatives for disadvantaged communities.
Through AMAHA, he played a key role in building numerous homes for the needy, distributing wheelchairs, and collaborating with fellow legendary artists to enhance community welfare.
“His commitment to helping others remained a fundamental part of his life’s work until his unexpected passing,” Minister McKenzie noted.
In recent times, Doc Shebeleza confronted health issues, spending time in the hospital on two occasions last year before his tragic passing today.
“On behalf of the Ministry, I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the countless fans whose lives he influenced,” said Minister McKenzie.
“South Africa has not only lost a musical icon but also a kind-hearted individual whose impact on our cultural landscape and community development will be cherished.
“His music, laughter, and legacy will forever resonate in our hearts.
“Rest in power, Victor ‘Doc Shebeleza’ Bogopane.”
In the meantime, Gauteng Education, Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation MEC Matome Chiloane expressed his deep sorrow over Doc Shebeleza’s passing.
