Nelson Mandela’s Grandson Missing from Court in Houghton Uber Hijacking Case with Co-Accused

CORRECTION: The grandson of Nelson Mandela was arrested but released before appearing in court due to a lack of sufficient evidence.

Johannesburg – Individuals apprehended in connection with the hijacking of an Uber driver made their appearance at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court for charges of robbing the Uber driver and stealing his vehicle.

Nevertheless, Nelson Mandela’s grandson, identified as the fifth suspect, did not appear because he was not charged with any offenses.

The hijacking took place in the upscale Houghton neighborhood, the same locality where Mandela’s residence is situated.

The defendants, who the court has stated cannot be identified until they participate in an identity parade, are facing charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping, and assault.

The prosecution claims that earlier this week on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, the suspects requested an Uber ride but reportedly proceeded to rob the driver of his vehicle instead.

The driver notified the tracking company, leading to an alert being sent to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit.

The unit successfully traced the hijacked vehicle to a residence in Houghton, which was formerly owned by ex-President Nelson Mandela.

Upon entering the premises, officers detained five individuals and recovered the alleged stolen vehicle, its license plate, and a firearm.

Additionally, the driver reportedly lost R800 in cash and an extra R300 from their account.

“The fifth suspect has been released due to insufficient evidence tying him to the alleged crimes,” stated Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng.

“The NPA will await the conclusion of remaining investigations before making a decision on whether to pursue prosecution.”

The case has been postponed to January 17, 2025, for further investigation and a potential bail application.
