Gogo Maweni released on R5,000 bail after being accused of assault
Gogo Maweni, South Africa’s most talked-about sangoma, is back in the limelight after her recent appearance at Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The star of Izangoma Zodumo, known as Makhotso Lee-Anne Mofokeng, was taken into custody last week due to a 2019 assault case.

The Allegations
Maweni, aged 39, is alleged to have struck a woman in the face with a bottle during an incident in Moroka, Soweto. After her arrest by the Gauteng Cold Case Unit and counter-intelligence teams, she was released on R5,000 bail. The case has been adjourned until February 11, 2025.
In a surprising twist, Maweni’s attorney, Marcia Makuse, shared that the traditional healer is expecting twins and is currently in her first trimester. Makuse added that Maweni only became aware of the police’s interest in her when she was asked to report to the Mondeor Police Station the previous Sunday.
Gogo Maweni in the Limelight
Rising to fame through the reality series Izangoma Zodumo, Maweni is no stranger to controversy. From accusations of practicing witchcraft against former partners to her very public dispute with fellow sangoma Gogo Skhotheni (Patricia Motsoeneng), drama seems to follow her.
Despite reconciling with Skhotheni in January 2025 after their heated online feud, this latest legal situation serves as a reminder that Maweni remains a topic of discussion in Mzansi.
What Lies Ahead?
While Maweni appeared composed in court, her legal challenges are far from resolved. As her case develops, all eyes will be on her subsequent actions, both legally and professionally.
Can Gogo Maweni balance her legal difficulties, her impending motherhood, and her contentious public image? February 11 can’t arrive soon enough to unveil the next chapter in this ongoing narrative.
