Michael Lomas, Eskom Fraud Suspect, Granted R2 Million Bail with Stringent Terms
Johannesburg – The Johannesburg High Court has granted bail of R2 million to Michael Lomas, who is facing fraud charges, with strict conditions in place.
The British national is alleged to have unlawfully diverted over a billion rand from Eskom via questionable contracts.
Lomas is among those accused of defrauding Eskom of more than R745 million, which was paid to Tubular Construction Projects, where he held the position of chairman.
The extensive tender fraud and corruption are associated with the construction of the large coal-fired Kusile Power Station.
Lomas, who is facing a minimum of 65 charges of fraud, has been in custody since his extradition from the UK in September of last year.

Earlier attempts by the elderly Lomas to secure bail were unsuccessful.
This time, the 77-year-old fraud suspect has been granted bail under strict conditions, which include:
- Submittal of his United Kingdom passport and South African Identity document to the investigating officer.
- A prohibition on applying for travel documents.
- Makeshift residence at a care home, where he will receive the necessary assistance.
- Providing the details of the care home to the investigating officer.
- Acquiring a smartphone equipped with location tracking for monitoring by the investigating officer.
- Not leaving the Gauteng jurisdiction without notifying the investigating officer.
Lomas was initially arrested in South Africa in 2021 and was later released on bail.
While on bail, Lomas fled the country.
