Simon’s Weekly Recap: Top Stock Picks and Strategies for Investing in JSE-Listed ETFs

I had an engaging discussion with Marc Ashton from Decusatio regarding small private investors on the JSE. The delisting by African Rainbow Capital highlighted a perceived lack of investor support, which might be accurate for institutional investors. However, with more than 70,000 smaller investors, this demographic is significant, demonstrating that stocks with compelling narratives, such as Rain and Tyme Bank, can successfully capture the interest of small investors.

The paradox of choice suggests that having more options can lead to decision paralysis. I discussed this concept with Daniel dos Passos from FNB ETFs in relation to the numerous ETFs available. I also spoke with Dr. Roelof Botha about the Q4 2024 Afrimat Construction Index, and one slide particularly stood out to me. The value of approved residential building plans in the Western Cape has now surpassed that of Gauteng. This is notable, as Gauteng is traditionally seen as the economic heartland of South Africa, indicating a shift in dynamics.
