“Focusing on a few straightforward tasks helps, but the downside is that the many happenings can be overwhelming.

“I’ve taken enough time to think about it, and it’s now behind me. I feel at peace with it.”

Brooksby’s suspension was reduced from 18 months to 13 months upon appeal, allowing him to return to competitive play in March 2024.

However, he didn’t make his comeback until the Australian Open this year, as he dealt with ongoing shoulder and wrist injuries.

Once questioning whether he would ever return to the sport as recent as last October, Brooksby has now joined the ranks of tour-level champions.

Recognized for his unique playing style, he dazzles with an array of unorthodox slices and a keen ability to redirect pace, entering the Houston tournament ranked No. 507 in the ATP list, needing a wildcard for qualification.

COMEBACK KING

In the first round of qualifying, Brooksby fought off a match point against Federico Gomez, then saved three consecutive match points against the third seed Alejandro Tabilo in the second round of the main draw.

He accomplished the same against the top seed Tommy Paul in the semi-finals.

On the finals day, he raced out to a 4-0 lead against Tiafoe with his exceptional game.

Although Tiafoe countered to level the first set at 4-4, Brooksby maintained his focus, breaking Tiafoe’s service to claim the first set.

He carried his momentum into the second set, breaking serve once again in the sixth game, ultimately winning the match 6-4, 6-2.

Following the match, Brooksby expressed his appreciation on the court: “Thank you to my team. From qualifying to match point down, it’s been a wild journey, and I value your support through it all.”

With this victory, Brooksby has surged over 300 places in the rankings, landing at No. 172.

Given his performance on Sunday, few would welcome the challenge of facing the in-form comeback king.
