Cardoso Discusses Maseko’s Comeback to the Sundowns Team

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso is quite impressed with Thapelo Maseko’s performance in training, leading to his selection as a substitute for their crucial CAF Champions League quarter-final first leg against Esperance de Tunis on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old speedy winger is encountering a tough second season at the Tshwane club, having fallen down the ranks at Chloorkop and often finding himself outside the main squad, which includes participation in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) team.

However, Maseko’s difficulties are mainly attributed to a series of injuries sustained during his time at Sundowns, alongside intense competition within the skilled squad. The former SuperSport United player was sidelined for 38 matches last season due to various knee and hamstring issues.

To assist him in regaining his form and fitness, the Downs coaching staff has allocated him to the reserve league for more consistent playing time, with his last appearance for the first team being during the unexpected 1-0 defeat to TS Galaxy in February.

Now, Cardoso, who took over from Manqoba Mngqithi in December 2024, has explained his rationale behind offering the young prospect a chance in such a crucial match where a spot in the semifinals is on the line.

“Maseko has been excelling in training; while it’s true he hasn’t seen regular playing time, he has stayed involved with the group. When a player consistently trains with the team, it reflects our faith in him and his unique capabilities,” Cardoso remarked.

“We believed that given the context of the game, his specific abilities could be advantageous. He’s incredibly fast and skilled at finding space behind defenses. He has been working with us to enhance these strengths.”

Although Cardoso supports his choice to substitute Maseko for goal scorer Peter Shalulile, he openly admitted that the tactical plan didn’t produce the desired outcome for the remainder of the match.

“That was our intention for him, but we couldn’t utilize him effectively as he needs to be given space to operate. He is a player who thrives in open environments rather than in confrontations with stronger center-backs,” he elaborated.

“Therefore, we needed to direct the ball away from the center-backs, but that strategy didn’t work out. Nevertheless, the decision to have him on the pitch was completely warranted. We are very pleased with his commitment and hard work every day, which is why he was granted this opportunity.”

Having earned the trust of the 52-year-old coach, Maseko is keen to boost his number of appearances as Masandawana gears up for the second leg of their encounter in Tunisia on Tuesday.

So far, the player has participated in 11 matches without yet starting a game across all competitions.
