Anticipated Weather Advisory: Heavy Rain and Possible Snowfall Expected in KwaZulu-Natal

Durban – Residents of KwaZulu-Natal have received warnings about a forthcoming drop in temperatures, heavy rainfall, and the potential for snowfall.

“We have obtained a weather report from the South African Weather Services indicating a cold front that will lead to falling temperatures, significant rainfall, and the possibility of snowfall,” cautioned KZN Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma late Tuesday, (15 April 2025).

“Although the SA Weather Services have not predicted that the province will be covered in snow, we urge motorists to stay updated with weather reports and proceed with caution.

“Specifically, our highly efficient Road Traffic Inspectorate team has been activated to monitor traffic carefully.”

MEC Duma stated that he has mobilized additional emergency assistance teams to remain on standby.

“Based on our previous experiences, we are well aware of the dangers and disruption associated with snow,” MEC Duma remarked.

“Recently, we faced an extreme heat index of 30 degrees Celsius, yet here we are, preparing for potential snowfall and heavy rain.

“These conditions highlight the realities of unpredictable weather patterns resulting from climate change.”

MEC Duma outlined the planned interventions to include:

Transport

1. Road Safety and Traffic Inspectorate: This team will coordinate potential road closures and monitor major routes in cooperation with N3 Toll Concession. Key areas of focus include the N3 between Harrismith, Tugela Toll, R617 from Kokstad to Underberg, N2 Ingeli, and N3 Mooi-River, among others.

2. The team will also oversee the escort of trucks and vehicles to prevent road congestion.

3. Drivers of Motor Graders: The Transport Infrastructure Unit has prepared Drivers of Motor Graders to respond swiftly and effectively to clear any snow before it accumulates on the roads. Over 10 Graders will be stationed on designated routes to ensure rapid response.

Human Settlements

1. Our mobile team from Human Settlements is ready to coordinate with the national Department of Human Settlements’ Emergency Housing and Mitigation Unit in case there is an urgent need to assist families affected by flooding or snow-covered homes.

2. Recently, we dealt with floods and localized landslides that tragically caused community fatalities. When necessary, we will work alongside the Minister of Human Settlements, Thembi Simelane, and her capable team to relocate families for their safety.

3. The deployment of Temporary Residential Units will be expedited to accommodate families in need.
