Riveiro Commends Mofokeng Following Soweto Derby Victory

Jose Riveiro, coach of the Orlando Pirates, is running out of ways to praise the remarkable talent of Relebohile Mofokeng, declaring that the young player “brings joy to everyone.”

Mofokeng played a crucial role in clinching a thrilling comeback win for Pirates, netting the decisive goal in their 2-1 Betway Premiership victory over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

A strong contender for the PSL Footballer of the Season award, Mofokeng showcased an impressive synergy with Deon Hotto before skillfully placing the ball past Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma.

This victory allowed Pirates to bounce back after a challenging week, which included their elimination from the CAF Champions League semi-finals by Pyramids, along with a midweek league loss to Sekhukhune United.

“Relebohile has been a beacon of joy for all Buccaneers since his arrival,” Riveiro stated on SuperSport TV after the match.

“The other players are also finding inspiration in his contributions. It’s remarkable that we finished the match with six young players on the pitch, illustrating the club’s growth and development. More positive outcomes are on the horizon for the team.”

Chiefs took an early lead in the second minute when Glody Lilepo converted a first-time shot from Dillan Solomons’ pass just outside the penalty area, catching Pirates fans off guard.

However, Pirates displayed commendable resilience, leveling the score in the 23rd minute. Mohau Nkota delivered a defense-splitting pass to Evidence Makgopa, who skillfully slotted the ball past Bvuma.

This victory marked Pirates’ fifth consecutive win over Chiefs in all competitions. Riveiro has matched a record set by former Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter, who also achieved five straight derby victories during his initial term with the Soweto giants.

Reflecting on the importance of the Soweto Derby, South Africa’s most beloved football clash, the departing Riveiro highlighted its unique nature. “It is something truly special,” he expressed.

“Wherever I go, it will be hard to find a comparable experience, as it truly celebrates football. I hope to participate in more Derbies.”

“In any role I take, this event stands out, with fans uniting to watch the match, free from issues, celebrating the clubs and their rich history in South Africa.

“It’s something extraordinary that should be treasured forever. I’ve always strived to convey to people worldwide what it means to play this game; they only genuinely understand it when they witness it firsthand. Hopefully, more people will be drawn to this incredible event.”

The rivalry between these two Soweto giants is set to continue as they prepare to face off again in the Nedbank Cup final at Moses Mabhida Stadium next Saturday.
