AfriForum Pursues Warrant to Seize Ex-President Zuma’s Assets Over R500,000 Legal Debt

Johannesburg – AfriForum has revealed its intention to secure warrants for the confiscation of former President Jacob Zuma’s assets to cover legal expenses exceeding half a million rand.

In a statement released to The Bulrushes on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, AfriForum highlighted: “Almost two years have elapsed since three courts ordered Jacob Zuma to pay AfriForum’s legal fees; yet, the former president still owes over R500,000 to the civil rights organization.”

AfriForum announced that it is moving forward with plans to issue warrants for asset seizure in order to recover these expenses.

“This step is essential because the latest deadline for payment (May 16) was overlooked,” AfriForum noted.

“These actions stem from a 2023 Constitutional Court ruling that declared Zuma’s medical parole unlawful.

“The same matter was previously dealt with in the Pretoria High Court and the Supreme Court of Appeal, both of which mandated costs to be awarded to AfriForum.”

Nearly two years later, AfriForum indicated that it has only received the legal fees linked to the case presented before the Constitutional Court, lacking recoveries from the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal cases.

Louis Boshoff, a spokesperson for AfriForum, commented: “Zuma’s delaying tactics are coming to an end, and the civil rights organization will soon have either proof of payment to show, or assets will be seized to fulfill the debt.

“It is crucial that these legal costs are settled, as, despite countless rulings against him, Zuma has spent minimal time in incarceration and has returned to lead one of the largest political factions in the nation.

“Whether Zuma is the president of the ANC or the MK party, the principle stands: No politician is above the law.”

Zuma served less than two months in prison in 2021 for refusing to testify before the Zondo Commission.

He was granted medical parole on August 16, 2021, but this parole was later deemed unlawful by the Constitutional Court in July 2023.

However, in October 2023, President Cyril Ramaphosa issued Zuma a presidential pardon, effectively nullifying his remaining sentence.

“Considering that Zuma has persistently evaded accountability, it is unacceptable to allow him to escape without settling these legal costs. AfriForum will pursue all necessary actions to ensure these debts are collected,” Boshoff asserted.
