Mhlongo’s Message to the New Pirates Signings
Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo has shared valuable insights with the club’s new recruits, highlighting the significant transformations they can expect as they join this prestigious organization.
As the 2025/26 season approaches, Pirates have enhanced their squad with several new acquisitions: Yanela Mbuthuma and Nkosikhona Ndaba (both from Richards Bay), Masindi Nemtajela (Marumo Gallants), Tshepang Moremi (AmaZulu), Sinoxolo Kwayiba (Chippa United), Tshepo Mashiloane (Baroka), Sihle Nduli (Stellenbosch), and Sipho Mbule (Mamelodi Sundowns).
In addition to the new signings, the Pirates have welcomed a new head coach, Abdelsam Ouaddou, who takes over from Jose Riveiro.
Mhlongo was involved in the welcoming of these arrivals, accompanied by club legends like Tebogo Moloi, Edward Motale, and former captains Lucky Lekgwathi, Happy Jele, and Innocent Maela.
“Orlando Pirates is a significant institution, thus it’s vital to transmit the legacy to the upcoming generation of players so they can understand the team’s culture,” Mhlongo remarked. “They need to comprehend where they are headed and the expectations that accompany it.”

Mhlongo further explained his involvement: “While I am not in a coaching capacity at Pirates, my focus is on mentorship. I share my personal experiences, including injuries and battles with depression. My goal is to help players adjust to the club’s expectations.”
Questions have arisen about Sipho Mbule, who was unable to complete his loan at Sekhukhune United from Sundowns due to off-field challenges last season.
His loan was cut short, and upon returning to Sundowns, his contract was not renewed.
Mhlongo, who faced significant public scrutiny during his tenure at Pirates, remarked, “Being part of such a large institution alters your life, presenting both challenges and rewards. It’s all about your response to it. My mission is to equip them with the necessary resources and guidance, encouraging them to seek assistance if they feel overwhelmed. I aim to promote such openness and wish them great success with the team.”
The new signings are anticipated to join the team’s pre-season tour in Spain, where they will compete in four matches from July 11 to 19.

Mhlongo made these comments in Durban on Tuesday while attending the Engen Knockout Challenge draw, set to take place in Kloof on Thursday and Friday.
