The McLaren driver from Bristol seized an opportunity when his teammate Oscar Piastri received a ten-second penalty due to a sudden stop during the safety car phase.

This allowed Max Verstappen to momentarily overtake the current championship leader before losing control just moments later.

Race officials then penalized the Australian driver for not adhering to safety car regulations.

In a highly emotional moment, Norris celebrated over the team radio, saying: “Wooo, we did it.”

In the parc ferme area, he struggled to hold back tears during a post-race interview with Sky Sports F1 analyst and former champion Jenson Button.

When reflecting on his performance after taking the lead, Norris stated: “Your mind just goes blank. Everything you’ve thought about before the race fades away.

“The key is simply to not mess it up, that’s rule number one.

“In the closing laps, I was scanning the crowd, trying to absorb it all and savor the moment, as it may never happen again.

“I hope it does. But these are memories I will cherish forever. It’s an amazing accomplishment.”

Button quickly apologized for the explicit language, alongside Norris himself.

Norris also praised his teammate, indicating he was “fast the whole race” and expressed gratitude towards his team for their car.

He noted: “This race was as intense as it gets. Oscar also had a strong performance.

“I must give credit to Oscar; he was remarkable throughout. So, hats off to him for putting up a great challenge.

“I cherish moments racing together, even if it can be less enjoyable when he’s ahead rather than behind me. But that’s racing.

“Kudos to him and McLaren; winning at home in front of friends and family is just incredible.”

Norris stood on the podium alongside Piastri and Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg, who celebrated his first-ever F1 podium after 239 races filled with near-misses.

The trio received uniquely crafted trophies made entirely of LEGO bricks.

Piastri, 24, showed visible frustration during his own post-race interview concerning the controversial ruling he faced.

He remarked: “I’m not going to say much. Well done to Nico; I think that’s the highlight of the day. I’ll leave it at that.”

“Apparently, braking behind the safety car is no longer acceptable. I managed to do it for five laps before the incident. I won’t elaborate; I’d prefer to avoid complications.

“A huge thank you to the fans for an amazing event. I appreciate everyone enduring the weather. Silverstone holds a special place in my heart, even if I wasn’t too happy today.”

Hulkenberg, 37, maintained a more positive attitude.

The German driver stated: “It’s definitely been a long time coming, hasn’t it? I always believed we had it in us, and I knew I had it in me somewhere.

“What a race—coming back from nearly last place, reliving the experience from the previous weekend. It’s honestly surreal.

“I’m not entirely sure how everything unfolded, but it was chaotic out there. It was a survival race for many in the field.

“I think we executed the right strategies, made the right decisions, had the correct tires, and stayed error-free—it was remarkable.”

Hulkenberg’s podium finish placed him ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who sought his first podium with Ferrari at a venue where he holds the record for the most wins (nine).

Hamilton finished P4, while Verstappen rebounded to P5 after spinning out under the safety car, dropping from P2 to P9.

Currently, Norris is just eight points behind Piastri in the drivers’ championship standings.
