Xander Schauffele, Open Champion, Unfamiliar with Trophy Locations and Shares Concerning Incident Involving His Wife

Last year, OPEN champion Xander Schauffele celebrated his win by enjoying tequila from the Claret Jug and indulging in a hefty Cuban cigar.

However, the Californian, whose play has waned since he clinched his second Major title at Troon last year, doesn’t fit the mold of a typical audacious American.

Schauffele, 31, shared that he doesn’t showcase any of his 12 professional trophies at home and has lost track of his Olympic gold medal. He expressed his annoyance at his wife for hanging a photo of his Tokyo 2021 win in their gym.

As he gears up to defend his title at Portrush this week, he noted: “I don’t have any trophies at my house. They might be at my parents’ house or stored away in a bank vault.”

“I rarely entertain guests, so what’s the purpose of displaying them?”

“I don’t want to step into a trophy room and say, ‘Look how accomplished I am’. That attitude has been with me since childhood.”

“Truthfully, I have no idea where my Olympic gold medal is.”

“What use is it to me?”

“My wife has put up some pictures celebrating my Olympic medal in our gym, but they’re placed just out of my reach.”

“I’d need a ladder to see them, which is quite frustrating.”

“If she were to hang a photo of me in a Masters Green Jacket (which Schauffele has yet to win), that would really irritate me.”

“That might actually motivate me more; I wouldn’t want to see that picture.”

“I’d prefer to have a picture of my dogs on the wall or even a clock. I’m often late, so a clock could be useful.”

While the two-time Major champion Schauffele did openly admit to tasting tequila from the Claret Jug, he maintains that he doesn’t celebrate like the locals do along the Northern Irish coast.

He remarked: “I’m a bit embarrassed to admit I had a little tequila from it while on vacation in Portugal — but not with salt and lime, as the lid barely opens.”

“I’ve had some wine from it, but not excessively. I don’t drink much.”

“Honestly, I indulged more after several championships last year.”

“But I’m not Irish and I know that celebrations here might be more elaborate than what I’m used to!”

“In my style, I celebrated with a cigar with my family, and I made a few phone calls. It was a great celebration.”

“Afterward, we quickly transitioned to the Olympics. It seems like whenever we partake in these tournaments, you quickly move on to the next one.”

“It’s unfortunate that I have to forego the trophy this year, but I’m eager to try and win it back.”
