“Witnesses reported that the assailants entered the tavern and started shooting indiscriminately, without saying anything,” Lieutenant Colonel Masondo stated.
Among the deceased were two women and three men, with three more individuals sustaining injuries.
“The motive for the shooting is still unknown,” added the police spokesperson.
“Authorities have launched investigations into murder and attempted murder in relation to this case.
“The police are actively seeking around ten suspects involved in this incident.”
In response to the shooting on Saturday, 19 July 2025, Brett Herron, Secretary-General of the GOOD Party, remarked: “The mass shooting in Olievenhoutsbosch, resulting in five fatalities, is incredibly tragic.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives in such a violent manner.
“Our communities are grappling with a crisis characterized by crime, gangsterism, and violence.”
Herron further observed: “We cannot ignore the emerging trend, revealing that such mass shootings predominantly occur in apartheid-era townships, where people are forced to live in ghetto-like conditions defined by poverty, overcrowding, and a lack of investment.”
Police are urging anyone with information that could assist in the investigation or help capture the suspects to contact the nearest police station or call Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
The African Transformation Movement (ATM) expressed profound concern and anger regarding the senseless and brutal murders of five individuals.
“We extend our sincerest condolences to the grieving families and call for swift and decisive action,” stated ATM Spokesperson, Zama Ntshona.
“It is unacceptable for armed criminals to carry out such acts with impunity, leaving communities traumatized and lives devastated.
The ATM has urged law enforcement and the Ministry of Police to immediately initiate a 72-hour manhunt aimed at apprehending the perpetrators of this heinous act.
“The fact that around ten armed individuals could invade a public venue and fire indiscriminately, without uttering a word, poses a serious threat to public safety and national security,” added Ntshona.
“We also demand a thorough and independent investigation into the operations of the tavern itself.”
The ATM raised serious issues regarding compliance with safety regulations, licensing requirements, and how such establishments may contribute to criminal activities within vulnerable communities.
“It is essential that the tavern owner, who is currently being questioned by police, undergo a full investigation—not just as a witness but as part of a wider inquiry into this tragic incident,” said Ntshona.
“South Africans must not become desensitized to mass shootings and violence.”
The ATM reiterated its call for a comprehensive review of community safety measures and the tightening of gun control policies.
“We urge the public to come forward with any information that could facilitate the arrests of those responsible,” Ntshona concluded.
“Let us come together to ensure that justice is not only served but visibly upheld.”
