Sun City Super Bowl Boxing Tournament Canceled; BSA Confirms Boxers Will Receive Purses
Pretoria – Boxing South Africa (BSA) has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that the boxers scheduled to compete in the Sun City Superbowl tournament, which was unexpectedly canceled, will receive their promised purses, and that fans will have their tickets refunded.
The event, initially set for Saturday, 20 September 2025, at the Sun City Superbowl, was canceled on short notice by TLB Promotions.
In a statement, BSA expressed its “deep disappointment” regarding the abrupt cancellation of the boxing tournament organized by TLB Promotions.
The fight card featured a headline bout between Aphiwe Mboyiya and Sibusiso Zingange, with the cancellation officially announced by promoter Joyce Kungwane on Friday, 19 September 2025, at approximately 21:00.
BSA noted, “The late notification is regrettable, especially given that the promoter had already completed all pre-weigh-in compliance measures, aside from logistical arrangements related to participants’ travel, accommodation, and subsistence.”
The tournament was called off due to the promoter’s failure to meet certain last-minute conditions imposed by her sponsor, which included a suggestion to postpone the event to Tuesday, 23 September 2025.
“At Boxing South Africa, our foremost priority is to protect and promote the rights and well-being of all boxers and participants,” BSA emphasized.
“In line with this commitment, we will do everything in our power to alleviate the adverse effects of this unfortunate situation on our affected licenses and stakeholders.
“As part of our response, we will ensure that all boxers receive their complete purses as per their contracts with the promoter.
“Furthermore, all fans who purchased tickets for the event will receive full refunds.”
BSA extended its heartfelt apologies to, first and foremost, the boxers, the boxing community, fans, sponsors, and all stakeholders for the disappointment and inconvenience caused by this cancellation.
BSA concluded: “We understand your frustration and assure you that we will hold accountable all parties responsible for this regrettable situation that impacts our noble sport.”
