Kolisi Reflects on Rugby Championship Victory: “This Team Has Truly Impacted Our Nation”
Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus and captain Siya Kolisi commended their squad for exhibiting extraordinary resilience in clinching a thrilling 29-27 triumph over the Pumas in their final Rugby Championship clash at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, on Saturday. This victory not only secured their second successive title but also underscored the considerable challenges awaiting them as they prepare for a demanding tour in November.
The Boks mounted a remarkable comeback after initially falling behind 13-3 in the 25th minute, swiftly seizing a 15-13 advantage shortly after halftime. However, they encountered stiff opposition from Argentina in the second half, eventually securing a nail-biting win.
Erasmus and Kolisi celebrated the success, expressing gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support. Nevertheless, the Bok coach provided a candid assessment of their performance, stating: “I’m pleased with the outcome and reclaiming the Castle Lager Rugby Championship for the second time in a row. This match was crucial for us, and although it wasn’t our finest showing, I’d rather learn from our mistakes while winning than while losing.”
“We are in a favorable position for the Rugby World Cup draw, but we understand that five challenging matches lie ahead and that there is much work to be accomplished.”
“We must acknowledge that Argentina has defeated Australia, New Zealand, and the British & Irish Lions, so we will celebrate tonight and focus on the positives from this match.”

Erasmus and Kolisi reiterated their expectations for a fiercely competitive match throughout the week. The coach remarked: “We expected a hard-fought contest, and it was clear that the players were fatigued by halftime. Argentina played exceptionally well.”
“They adopted an open style of play, and we received a yellow card in the first half along with several close calls that could have altered the game’s dynamics. Nevertheless, they demonstrated incredible resolve and proved their ability to push to the limit.”
When asked about halftime guidance, Kolisi explained: “It was straightforward; we all shared the same sentiment as the coaches. We needed to enhance our cohesion, minimize errors, and curtail penalties.”
“That said, full credit to Argentina. We knew they would approach the game fiercely, and their mentality was evident; we had to keep battling until the final whistle.”
Reflecting on the team’s unique strengths, Kolisi noted: “We have learned how to fight together and dig deep, thanks to coach Rassie’s shift in our mindset.”
“This team has accomplished a great deal for the nation, and I am proud of my teammates and coaches. They consistently innovate, and we, as players, adapt and embrace those changes.”
“The Castle Lager Rugby Championship was highly competitive, with anyone capable of claiming victory. Winning the trophy for a second consecutive year is a significant achievement for us and our country, and we are profoundly grateful for the support from fans in the stadium and those at home.”
