Respect Creates Lasting Change
Media personality Somizi Mhlongo has finally addressed Ngizwe Mchunu’s inflammatory comments about the LGBTQIA+ community, following considerable public outrage.
The issue erupted when Ngizwe was denied entry to the Kwa Mai-Mai traditional market on Sunday, a decision made after he made derogatory remarks regarding a gay couple who gained attention for proudly wearing imvunulo—traditional Zulu attire—during their wedding ceremony.

Ngizwe’s tirade didn’t stop there; he further claimed that openly gay individuals, including Somizi, should consider leaving South Africa. This statement caused widespread national fury and ignited passionate conversations about culture, dignity, and inclusion.
“A Missed Opportunity for Mutual Education”
In the midst of the social media storm, Somizi took a surprisingly composed and reflective stance. He shared that he found a meaningful lesson amid the chaos:

“There was a missed opportunity for us to educate one another that went by unnoticed. As a Zulu person, I wasn’t aware that there’s an imvunulo specifically designated for royalty. I didn’t know that,” Somizi commented.

“Amidst all the anger and noise, I found a valuable lesson. It was a teachable moment for me, and I believe respect is essential and non-negotiable. I urge everyone to adopt this mindset.”
Somizi encouraged LGBTQIA+ individuals to transcend hate, promoting understanding and education over revenge.
“The Human Rights Commission must step in to ensure this kind of behavior is put to an end. He needs to recognize that one cannot just wake up and assert that people deserve violence; his anger is misplaced,” he asserted.

Somizi Mhlongo: “Do Not Confuse My Sexuality with Weakness”
Somizi concluded his remarks with a powerful message about dignity and self-respect:
“Respect is crucial. The way you convey a message can completely transform its meaning. It’s not merely about what you say, but how you choose to say it. Be aware of the battles worth engaging in, and never misinterpret my sexuality as a sign of weakness. Choosing to wear weaves should not be seen as a weakness; it reflects my strength and larger identity.”

Meanwhile, trans activist Yaya Mavundla criticized Ngizwe’s statements, labeling them as both “dangerous” and culturally ignorant.

“This individual asserts that LGBTQIA+ people shouldn’t don traditional clothing; he implies we should create our own, which is fundamentally problematic,” Yaya remarked.
“Identifying as gay, trans, lesbian, bisexual, or intersex does not erase your heritage and culture.”
Yaya further stressed that no one has the right to dictate who can or cannot wear certain garments unless those garments are explicitly reserved for leaders or royalty.
