Enhanced Security Measures at Church Square to Protect the Kruger Monument
Pretoria – Security measures surrounding the Kruger Monument on Church Square in Pretoria have been strengthened to protect the statues.
In honor of Paul Kruger’s bicentennial birthday on 10 October 1825, AfriForum announced that this security upgrade serves as a special “birthday” gift for Oom Paul.
AfriForum pointed out that this initiative was initiated due to recent vandalism that significantly damaged several statues within the Kruger Monument in September.

A gun barrel and a shoe belonging to two of the Boer statues at the base of the Kruger statue were found damaged.
Moreover, damage to the security fence surrounding the monument raised immediate safety concerns for AfriForum.
“Following productive discussions with representatives from the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, it was decided that AfriForum would handle repairs and reinforcement of the fence,” stated Alana Bailey, Head: Cultural Affairs at AfriForum.
AfriForum emphasizes the need for communities to take an active role in preserving their cultural heritage landmarks.
“Kruger symbolizes resistance against British colonialism and represents collaboration between Afrikaners and other communities,” explained Bailey.
“His contributions to the nation’s history continue to inspire many.”
“It is appropriate that this initiative occurs on his birthday, as it not only protects the monument but also raises awareness among current generations,” she added.
Discussions among stakeholders regarding the restoration and future care of the monument and its statues are ongoing, according to Bailey.
“We recognize that this effort is not a permanent solution, but it is vital to safeguard the monument as much as possible until more lasting solutions can be found,” Bailey concluded.
As part of the bicentennial celebrations, AfriForum also participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at Paul Kruger’s grave in Heroes’ Field in Pretoria, unveiled the Kruger statue in Orania, and engaged in initiatives in Mpumalanga to honor the name of the Kruger National Park.
