Durban – The remains of Nathi Mthethwa, who served as South Africa’s ambassador to France, have been returned to his home province of KwaZulu-Natal.
The former minister was found deceased outside a Paris hotel, with his body arriving at King Shaka International Airport in Durban on Friday, 10 October 2025.
A solemn reception ceremony took place near the airport, in front of the statue of King Shaka, after whom the airport is named.
The significance of bringing the ambassador’s remains to the statue prior to moving to the local morgue is rooted in a “special historical relationship” between the Mthethwa family and that of the Zulu monarch.
African National Congress (ANC) representatives included the party’s 2nd deputy secretary-general, Maropene Ramokgopa.
She noted that the death of Ambassador Mthethwa at the age of 58 represents a significant loss for the ANC.
His lifeless body was discovered just over a week earlier, on 30 September 2025, outside a hotel in Paris, with evidence suggesting a tragic fall from the 22nd floor, where he had booked a room.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Cde Mthethwa. His passing is also a setback for the ANC,” Ramokgopa remarked.
“He contributed significantly across various government roles.
“His commitment and diligence were apparent even while serving as an ambassador abroad.
“His legacy will persist, as he imparted to us the importance of remaining steadfast in our movement, even in challenging times,” Ramokgopa added.
Ambassador Mthethwa’s brother-in-law, Dr. Sifiso Buthelezi, expressed his gratitude to France for their assistance during the repatriation process.
“I stand here today simply to express my thanks,” Buthelezi stated.
“We are thankful to God for guiding us this far.
“Now we have returned home, not alone, but with a son of the soil to present to his family and the entire nation.”
Earlier that day, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation hosted an Official Memorial Service for the ambassador.
The late ambassador will be afforded a Special Official Funeral Category 2 and is scheduled to be interred at KwaMbonambi in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, 12 October 2025.
