Drunk Driving Enforcement: JMPD Arrests 166 Offenders in Just One Week in Johannesburg

Johannesburg – Festive events featuring extensive alcohol consumption have kept the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) busy, leading to the arrest of at least 166 individuals for drunk driving within just one week.

In a statement issued to The Bulrushes, the JMPD voiced their concern regarding the alarming rate of arrests connected to driving under the influence of alcohol.

As reported by the JMPD, during heightened traffic control measures citywide from 21 April 2025 to 27 April 2025, officers apprehended 166 drivers for being intoxicated.

“These arrests underscore the JMPD’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users in the city,” the announcement revealed late Tuesday, 29 April 2025.

The JMPD highlighted that these operations, which involved increased visibility and strategic roadblocks throughout different areas of Johannesburg, were designed to deter drunk driving and hold violators accountable.

“The blatant disregard for the law and the safety of others exhibited by these individuals is deeply concerning,” remarked JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca.

“Our officers will continue to be vigilant and proactive in enforcing traffic laws, particularly those related to driving under the influence.”

“We aim to send a strong message that drunk driving will not be accepted in Johannesburg, and those who endanger lives will face severe consequences under the law.”

The JMPD warned drivers against operating a vehicle while intoxicated, describing it as “a serious offense” that can lead to significant injuries, fatalities, and legal repercussions.

The JMPD urged all drivers to refrain from drinking and driving and to make responsible choices to protect their safety and that of others on the road.

“Consider alternatives for transportation, such as e-hailing services or designated drivers,” recommended the JMPD.

The individuals arrested are anticipated to appear in court soon to answer charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol.

The JMPD reaffirmed its dedication to fighting drunk driving through ongoing enforcement efforts and public awareness campaigns.
