Will Cardoso Adjust Sundowns’ Tactics for the CAFCL Final?

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has shared insights on whether he intends to implement a different style of play for the highly awaited first leg of the CAF Champions League final against Pyramids FC at Loftus Stadium this Saturday (15:00).

The Brazilians are gearing up to compete for continental glory against the wealthy Egyptian side in the capital, with the return leg scheduled for June 1 in Cairo, marking a crucial encounter in this two-legged tie.

Masandawana triumphed over Tunisian giants Esperance de Tunis and the record 12-time African champions Al Ahly to reach the final. Meanwhile, Pyramids defeated AS FAR from Morocco in the quarterfinals and eliminated Orlando Pirates in the semifinals.

As the important match approaches, the Portuguese coach affirms that his team is well-prepared in terms of their style of play, following his appointment last December, succeeding Manqoba Mngithi.

“I can’t ignore the successes we’ve achieved since I joined. The progress we’ve made has enabled us to express ourselves in a way that aligns with the football we aim to play,” Cardoso commented.

“Our current style doesn’t derive from past gameplay; it reflects the modern history since we arrived to where we stand today. As of today, [Friday], we are undoubtedly in the best possible condition.

“We need to transfer that mentality onto the pitch, but it’s vital to acknowledge that our strategic framework will shape our approach for this match.”

While valuing the style he has incorporated at Chloorkop, Cardoso emphasizes their commitment to maintaining the club’s identity during this critical match.

The 52-year-old coach has also encouraged his players to play with self-assurance.

“There are always nuances in the game, and understanding the opponent’s tactics is critical. We will stay true to our identity and the effort that both the club and we have been investing since I started,” he explained.

“Achieving a balance between these factors is essential for our performance. Above all, it’s important for my players to feel relaxed, as comfort significantly influences our adaptation to varying game styles.”

“We have the capability to excel in these high-stakes matches, and my goal is for my players to develop in such environments.”

The Tshwane giants aim to secure a favorable result at home in their quest to assert their dominance on the African continent and add a second star to their crest, while the Cairo-based side seeks its first continental title.
