Chery Acquires Nissan’s Rosslyn Plant, Signaling the Conclusion of Nearly 60 Years of Local Production
The Chinese automotive firm Chery is set to take over the assets of Nissan’s Rosslyn plant in Pretoria, marking the end of almost sixty years of Nissan vehicle manufacturing in South Africa.

This development was applauded by Trade, Industry, and Competition Minister Parks Tau, who celebrated Chery South Africa’s investment in the country’s automotive sector.

The acquisition will enable the Chinese company to solidify a sustainable manufacturing presence in South Africa. The Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC) indicated that the deal is awaiting regulatory approvals.
Chery’s Expansion Signals a New Chapter for South African Automotive Manufacturing
The department confirmed in a statement that this transaction is part of ongoing efforts to enhance and modernize the policy framework of the automotive industry and support initiatives.

DTIC spokesperson Kaamil Ali stated, “This announcement aligns with the DTIC’s continuous dialogue with the industry to rejuvenate the automotive sector policy and its support mechanisms.”
The acquisition by Chery SA is still pending regulatory approval, after which more information will be shared with the public.

Ali emphasized the automotive sector’s crucial role in South Africa’s economy, highlighting its importance in preserving manufacturing capabilities and creating jobs.
“The South African automotive industry remains a key pillar of manufacturing and job creation. The minister appreciates Chery SA’s dedication to working with the DTIC throughout the implementation phase,” he remarked.
